When most people think of moving to Nevada and getting a job, they automatically think of Las Vegas. The state has much more to offer, however, including many Reno jobs.

As with much of the nation, the faltering economy has not skipped over Reno. The area has seen an increase in job losses and an increase in unemployment. However, this does not mean the area doesn’t have any jobs to offer.

During November 2008, the Reno-Sparks area had a total non-farm employment of 219,800 workers, according to the United States Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics. This is down from 220,600 workers during October 2008 and a 3 percent decrease from last year.

The Reno area had an unemployment rate of 7.8 percent during November, up from 7.2 percent during October and higher than the national unemployment rate of 6.7 percent. Comparatively, Las Vegas had an unemployment rate of 7.9 percent during November and 7.6 percent during October. Nevada as a whole had an unemployment rate of 8 percent during November and 7.7 percent during October.

If you’re someone who’s looking for a job in Reno, you should take comfort in the fact that the area has much to offer. Reno is home to two Fortune 500 companies, Sierra Pacific Resources and International Game Technology. Bally Technologies and GameTech also have large development and manufacturing presences in Reno.

Reno has a gaming industry of its own, which includes such casino resorts as Atlantis, the Peppermill and the Grand Sierra Resort.

For those in education professions, Reno also has an extensive amount of colleges and universities, including the University of Nevada, Reno; Truckee Meadows Community College; the Nevada School of Law at Old College; Career College of Northern Nevada and Morrison University. The city has 10 public high schools and there are three high schools in neighboring Sparks. Reno-Sparks collectively has 13 middle schools and 64 elementary schools. Reno also has many charter schools and a few private high schools, including Bishop Manogue High School and Sage Ridge School.
