Although the city’s unemployment rate saw a slight decline, more jobs in Reno were lost during April.
The Reno-Sparks area’s unemployment rate decreased from 11.2 to 11 percent during April. This is the first time the area’s unemployment has declined since August 2008, when the unemployment rate decreased from 6.7 percent to 6.6 percent. However, at the same time, the area continued to lose jobs.
The area had a total non-farm employment of 198,900 workers during April, according to the United States Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics. This is down from 199,600 workers during March and an 8.5 percent decrease from last year. Every single industry saw a decrease in jobs when compared to last year.
Once again, the construction industry took the biggest hit when compared to last year. That industry employed 11,700 workers during April, up from 11,600 workers during March, but a 29.1 percent decrease from last year. The mining and logging industry also took a massive hit. That industry employed 300 workers during April, the same as during March, but a 25 percent decrease from last year.

As a whole, the State of Nevada saw its unemployment rate increase from 10.4 percent to 10.6 percent during April. The state had a total non-farm employment of 1,200,900 workers during April, down from 1,208,500 workers during March and a 6.1 percent decrease from last year.
