One organization that helps people secure and train for Nevada jobs will soon receive a substantial amount of funding.
Nevada JobConnect recently announced that it will get $1.4 million to spend on administration and job training this year. The funding is made up in part by $500,000 from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, which will be used specifically for training job applicants for careers in corrections and green energy according to an article by the Pahrump Valley Times.
The organization is already receiving $400,000 for salaries, operational expenses, utilities and supplies. The remainder of the money, $540,000, will go to run the other Workforce Investment Act agencies affiliated with Nevada JobConnect, such as Nevada Partners.
The organization placed third out of more than 50 applicants for the funding, which is coming from the U.S. Department of Labor through the Southern Nevada Workforce Investment Board to Nevada JobConnect. Another plus is that the organization doesn’t have to reapply for the funds every year.
Nevada JobConnect has a current quota of finding jobs for 120 clients, and they placed 186 applicants last year. However, under the new funding agreement, the organization will have a goal of finding jobs for another 330 applicants. Overall, the funding can be used to provide tools for a job, gas money to get there, travel expenses, sheriff’s cards, fingerprinting, background checks or anything else required to get a person a job.
Some of the money will be used to set up a satellite office in Tonopah, which would allow JobConnect to use interactive, authio-visual technology to meet with job applicants who can’t travel to Pahrump, where JobConnect is based. JobConnect plans to merge with Great Basin College as of July 1.
