Anyone looking for a Nevada career will most likely have a hard time finding a job.
Today the latest unemployment numbers were released, and according to the United States Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics, the nation is facing an unemployment rate of 6.5 percent, up from 6.1 percent the last two months. This means the country lost more than 200,000 jobs during October, and more than 1 million jobs have been lost so far this year.
At the same time, Nevada had an unemployment rate of 7.3 percent during September. This is a jobless rate the state hasn’t seen since the mid-1980s, and that number is only expected to get worse.
In southern Nevada, the unemployment rate is predicted to rise, according to an article by KVBC. The turmoil started when home and mortgage companies began to surrender to the credit and housing crisis the nation is facing. And in Nevada, companies from Zappos to Zippo are laying off employees.
Zappos, an online shoe retailer, made $840 million in sales last year, but that wasn’t enough to avoid job cuts. The company recently had to cut 8 percent of its employees.
The Nevada Department of Unemployment has seen its visitor volume more than double since last year. The department has extended its hours until 6:30 p.m. to help with the situation.
“Our phone lines are very busy,” Mae Flennoy, who works at the department, said in the article. “We’ve had to hire a number of new people in order to handle our volume.”
The nation as a whole also is facing its highest unemployment rate since the 1980s. Even the September 11 attacks had less of an impact on the American economy. It also doesn’t help that consumer confidence is at an all-time low and many people are wondering how many more workers will lose their jobs.
“Certainly, when you have that trickle down effect, you will see it in all types of areas,” Flennoy added.
The new unemployment numbers will be released Friday, and the government is expected to report 200,000 jobs lost in October alone. That brings this year’s total to nearly one million lost jobs.
